New standards for learning, like the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, should teach our students the critical thinking skills they need to prepare for a successful and productive life after high school. We need to talk more about how to make sure new learning standards positively impact students.

Standards should not be tangled up in politics but should instead be responsive to student needs and the feedback coming from teachers, principals, and parents. This is a generation of kids who need to learn how to think more deeply, flexibly, and critically, because we live in a rapidly changing world where today's technology can become yesterday's news. How do we educate and motivate our communities to engage with the new learning standards and prepare students for success in STEM, college, careers, and life?New standards for learning, like the Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, should teach our students the critical thinking skills they need to prepare for a successful and productive life after high school.
